Chapter 17
Nathan
What just happened? Nathan stared up at the ceiling â from Liamâs bed â contemplating that very question.
Sex, Nathan. You just shagged the one person you said you wouldnât. Sex led to awkwardness, and if things got awkward with Liam, they would be awkward with Mark and the kids by extension.
He sat up and looked around at the horror their sex tornado had caused. Cabinets flailed open and clothes thrown every which way and the coffeemaker askew with the plug saving it from falling into the sink. They had really strange, but really good sex. Nathan rubbed his head, expecting a hangover, but there was none. His mind was clearer than itâd been in a long time, even as it wrestled with the inevitable fallout.
He watched Liamâs chest move up and down with the contented breaths of post-sex napping. The bed sheet rested just below his waist, blatantly teasing Nathan. Liam was all hot ruggedness on the outside and sweetness on the inside. He was a good guy, and he deserved better than some wild fling. He was not built for one-night stands. Which was going to make the rest of today very uncomfortable.
âWhere are you going?â Liam asked in a scratchy voice, a foot still in his dream world.
Nathan put on his pants. âI should check on the ewes. See if any more of them are popping out lambs. Like you said, itâs a chain reaction.â
He found his shirt stuck under the nightstand, curious as to the aerodynamics that led it to that spot. This was what Nathan did best. He knew how to beat a quick retreat, even if this time, he wanted to get back in bed and rest his head against Liamâs chest.
âNathan.â Liam grabbed hold of his hand. His milky blue eyes fixed him in place, but Nathan had to be stronger. âThe sheep will be fine for a few more minutes.â
Liam held his hand like he had held Nathan a little while ago: with confidence and surety.
âI suppose thereâs some policy in place against the boss shagging his farmhand.â
âIâll have to check with human resources.â
Nathan reached for one of his shoes, but Liam gave his hand a little tug.
âYou donât have to run out so fast.â
âWe both know this canât happen again.â Nathan made sure there was levity in his voice.
âNah yeah, I wasnât even planning for it to happen at all.â
âSame.â
âAnd youâre leaving soon anyway.â Liam said it with a matter-of-factness that startled Nathan. He wasnât wrong, but it didnât sound right either. âWhen does your movie start shooting?â
The movie. Fucking Babe the fucking pig. The lie was like a virus, spreading and growing.
âSoon.â There was no use getting attached to Liam, to anyone. They could ditch you on a doorstep at any moment.
âI hope youâll stay through lambing season. I canât get it through it without you.â
The words hit Nathan right in the gut. Before he could stop himself, he returned into the warm bed and let Liamâs arms curl around his body.
